Airplay for Windows Media Center written 5 years ago

Windows Vista

Listening to a friend at work bragging about his apple TV, I grew jealous of the AirPlay facility - one feature which my Windows Media Center setup couldn’t match. But lo, some googling later at home I find that today Thomas Pleasance has released AirPlay for Windows Media Center.

It’s everything you could dream it to be, working smoothly and allowing you at a drop of a hat to flick a video on the ipad over to the telly and start watching it on the big screen right away.

It’s so good I made a nerdy video. You’ll thank me it’s silent and you don’t have to listen my droning voice:

I can confirm it does work with Videos stored on the ipad, Youtube, and playing a video nicely interrupts whatever video (or not) is playing in Media Center.

There are some caveats though:

This is a Beta version of the product, so hopefully the above will be fixed, but in comparison to the alternative made by some university somewhere it’s as polished as a shiny button.

For audio you can also use the Shairport4w plugin. This runs in Windows in the bottom right corner as a background application, and can receive Airplay audio at any time.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/shairport4w/

There is a bit of cross-over though.. if using The above for Airplay pictures / movies, outputting a movie with show Audio to Shairport4w OR WMC above..

As an analogy, I suppose Shairport4w acts like an Airport Express, and the above plugin works like AppleTV!

Aerodrom is a another AirPlay server for Windows PC and Windows Media Center. It lets you seamlessly stream audio, video, pictures and slideshows from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your PC or notebook without configuration hassles. I’m a paid up user of Aerodrom (Since AirPlay for MCE hasn’t been updated yet), and my verdict is that it isn’t that great. The Video playback mostly works, but sometimes the client will casually crash or a video just wont’ start to play.

Audio playback is mostly unusable. I have contacted support about this, and it is improving, but it’s still not at a listen-to-able. The crackles and gliches may only by every 10 mins now (instead of every minute), but it’s still not properly functioning software.

Dear Rob,
